LEWISTON – Family members and fire officials were making funeral arrangements Friday for Roland Levesque, the 47-year-old firefighter who died a day earlier of an apparent heart attack. Levesque’s funeral was planned for 2 p.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Cemetery Mausoleum. Dozens of firefighters are expected to attend the service to pay tribute to their fallen comrade.

“Everything has been offered up,” said Lewiston fire Chief Michel Lajoie. “It all depends on what the family wants.”

Levesque was golfing in Boothbay Harbor with three other firemen Thursday morning when he collapsed. Each of his golfing partners was trained in life-saving techniques, but Levesque died shortly after he was taken to a hospital, friends said.

A 22-year veteran of the Fire Department, Levesque had worked on Engine 5 at the Main Street substation.

On Friday, Lajoie and other firefighters were staying in contact with Levesque’s family as funeral arrangements were being finalized. The fireman is survived by his wife, Elaine and three daughters.

“He was just a great guy. Everybody liked him,” said Roland Godbout, one of Levesque’s closest friends. “He was the kind of guy who would do anything to help you out.”

Soon after Levesque died, word spread among firefighters in Lewiston and elsewhere. City leaders discussed the tragedy at a meeting at City Hall. By Thursday night, a sign was erected in front of the central fire station in tribute to “our fallen brother.”

Family members were asking that, instead of flowers, donations be made to help finance Levesque’s daughter’s college education. Checks may be made payable to Holy Cross Credit Union, care of Rick Dostie, 55 Cotton Road Lewiston, ME 04240.
