AUBURN – Mary J. Hanscom, 87, a resident of Main Street, Greene, died Thursday, Nov. 18, at Clover Living Center surrounded by her family.

She was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Dean W. and Evelyn (Sirman) Jackman. She attended school in Fayette and was a graduate of Kents Hill School. She earned her B.S. in Home Economics at the University of Maine in Orono, graduating in 1940.

She married Robert O. Hanscom Sr. on May 10, 1946, in Fayette. Mr. Hanscom passed away in 1991. They made their home and raised their family in Greene. She was an active member of the Baptist Church of Greene, serving on numerous committees, and also was an active member of the Republican Party.

She was a Girl Scout Leader and Den Mother. She loved homemaking, being a part of her community and traveling extensively throughout the United States and abroad with her husband, Robert.

She is survived by her son, Robert O. Hanscom Jr. and his wife, Audrey, of Greene; two daughters, Martha J. Hanscom and her husband, Robert Roten, of Laramie, Wyo., and Margaret E. Nelson and her husband, David, of Dublin, N.H.; five grandchildren, Bridget Crosby and her husband, Craig, of Bar Harbor, Luke Hanscom and his wife, Stephanie, of Greene and Emily, Averill and Nora Nelson, of Dublin, N.H.; two great-grandchildren, Keith and Keegan Hanscom, of Greene.

She was predeceased by a son, Edwin R. Hanscom.
