PORTLAND – The ability to strike quickly has been a trademark of the Bonny Eagle football team all season long and that carried the Scots to their first-ever Class A state championship Saturday afternoon.

Bonny Eagle’s tandem of Matt O’Donnell and John Wiechman combined for over 300 rushing yards while sparking a second-half surge for a 29-19 victory over Bangor at chilly Fitzpatrick Stadium.

The Scots took a 14-13 lead at halftime. “We had some early turnovers,” Bonny Eagle coach Kevin Cooper said. “We had a talk during halftime and decided to go back to what got us here. It was decided to stick with our game plan.”

O’Donnell scored the go-ahead points, with a 12-yard run in the third quarter. The senior quarterback (154 yards, 20 rushes) also threw for a two-point conversion to make it 22-19.

In the fourth quarter, O’Donnell (5-for-11, 82 yards, one interception) threw a four-yard TD to Kyle McKague. Chris Auger kicked his third point after.

Bangor had taken the lead on a Nick Payson 10-yard run. Payson also had a one-yard score. The junior ran for 112 yards on 28 carries. The Rams, who scored 17 points off turnovers, got fumble recoveries from Eric Anderson, Alex Gallant and Ricky Dexter.

Bonny Eagle had an equalizer in Wiechman (215 yards, 25 carries), who broke a tackle and sprinted 77 yards for a TD. O’Donnell also had a 20-yard TD scramble in the first quarter

“There’s not to much more that I can say about Wiechman,” Cooper said. “The kid just does what he does. It’s amazing.”

Bangor junior Tyler Barron kicked field goals of 20 and 34 yards.
