AUGUSTA – The Maine Forest Service is calling on all fifth-grade classes in Maine to showcase their artistic talents by creating posters reflecting the theme “Trees are Terrific and Energy Wise.” The annual contest educates children about the importance of planting and caring for trees.

“Trees are vital to us all, and we need to share their history and grandeur with future generations,” said John Rosenow, president of the National Arbor Day Foundation.

“Through this contest, students have the opportunity to learn about the environmental benefits of trees and develop an appreciation of trees and what they provide us.”

Teachers and home schoolers in Maine can sign up by contacting Jan Ames Santerre, state contest coordinator. Requests can be made by sending an e-mail to Santerre at [email protected] or by calling 623-2371. Teachers will receive free ecosystem curriculum materials, including in-depth lesson plans, hands-on activities and contest information.

Following in-school activities, students from Maine will be eligible to participate in a statewide competition, with the winner advancing to the national level. The deadline for state contest submissions is March 11, 2005.

The state winner will receive a $100 savings bond and a tree planted in his or her honor at their school.
