RUMFORD – Selectmen plan to set up a meeting with Dixfield officials to discuss possible ways the two towns could work together.
Board Chairman Jim Thibodeau said Dixfield’s town manager sent a letter to the town asking for such a meeting. A similar letter was also sent to Mexico. That town’s board will take up the request at next Tuesday’s board meeting.
Town Manager Robert Welch said Dixfield had previously approached the Rumford Public Works Department about the possibility of Rumford doing maintenance work for Dixfield vehicles. Among the areas the towns could work together include labor and equipment sharing.
Also on Thursday, former Selectman Eugene Boivin suggested that the current board send a letter to the Oxford County commissioners objecting to the expected hike in county taxes.
Boivin is a member of the county’s Budget Committee. He said Rumford pays 17 percent of the county tax. He objected to the hiring of three additional deputies, a move that he said will result in Rumford paying for one-half deputy and one-half cruiser.
Penalty Box Restaurant owner Andy Cornier asked the board to reconsider the two-hour parking restrictions along Exchange and Canal streets. The matter is expected to be placed on the board’s next meeting agenda.
Selectmen put the winter overnight parking ban into effect, beginning with the first snow storm, but no later than Dec. 1.
The board on Friday set a special closed-session for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 to discuss a business proposal for Abbott Farm Plaza with the town’s lawyer, Jennifer Kreckel.
