MEXICO – Selectmen have a full schedule set for Tuesday, beginning with a possible decision resulting from meetings with the Friends of the Wellness Center, to a closed session to discuss a personnel matter with the town manager.
Board Chairman Arthur Bordeau said some action may be taken on the Wellness Center as a result of a special meeting held Thursday. The town and Wellness Center are trying to work out a resolution of the center’s debt of nearly $27,000 to the town.
The board is expected to devote most its time Tuesday to a systematic meeting with municipal department heads to find ways to reduce spending from the current operating budget. Each head has been directed to bring suggestions for reduction to the selectmen. The town has found itself with a budget deficit of at least $300,000, pending submission of the auditor’s final report.
Bordeau said he is working to set up meetings with auditor Keel Hood to go over town figures.
Selectmen are also expected to meet with River Valley Technology Center Director Norman MacIntyre for an update on the number of jobs created at the center. Mexico sponsored a Community Development Block Grant that helped establish the center. Part of the grant requirements is the creation of at least 40 jobs within a specified period of time.
Bordeau said he plans to make a recommendation that whenever the town’s Fire Department is called to a personal injury auto accident, the insurance companies of the people involved be billed for the department’s costs.
Other agenda items include: discussion and possible action on a letter from the town of Dixfield suggesting potential cooperative efforts between towns, announcement of health insurance increases, establishment of a general assistance director, a decision on how to address drop-offs at the Free Store, and a public hearing on license renewal for Courtesy Cab.
In addition to the town manager personnel issue, the board will also enter into a closed session to discuss board communications.
