Tunnels connect former dormitories and administrative buildings at the site of the Augusta Mental Health Institute.

During the 1970s patients were encouraged to paint murals and poetry along walls of the underground passageways to express themselves. Professional Maine artists were also invited in help brighten the dark tunnels.

Once used by patients and AMHI support staff, the tunnels are now closed for general use.

AMHI has been replaced by the $31 million Riverview Psychiatric Center, located just south of the AMHI complex.
