MEXICO – A Canton man was indicted Friday on a felony assault charge that could net him up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
An Oxford County grand jury indicted Matthew S. Waite, 21, on one count of elevated aggravated assault for using a steel-toed boot to seriously injure a man on June 12 in Mexico.
He was also charged with misdemeanor assault for injuring another man on the same day in Mexico.
A warrant was also issued Friday for Waite’s arrest.
According to Mexico police, the charge of elevated aggravated assault in Maine is the equivalent of attempted homicide. It is a Class A felony punishable by up to 40 years.
