DURHAM – It took firefighters nearly four hours to extinguish a slash and wood fire Tuesday afternoon on Shiloh Road.
The blaze, which began as a permitted burn, was reported around noon by a concerned neighbor who spotted large billows of smoke. Upon arrival, firefighters said a “tremendous amount” of slash and scrap wood was burning and called for backup to put it out. No structures were involved.
Firetrucks from Freeport, Pownal and Lisbon responded to the scene while New Gloucester and Pownal trucks filled in at the Durham station. Also at the scene were Trooper Scott Gosselin and Maine Forest Ranger John Leavitt. No injuries were reported.
The fire began as a permitted burn, Fire Chief Bill St. Michel said, and remained under investigation Tuesday night.
