PARIS – Two men were indicted on rape charges Friday by the Oxford County grand jury.
Alden R. Mason Jr., 32, a convicted sex offender, was indicted on a charge of gross sexual assault after allegedly compelling a woman to engage in a sexual act with him July 24 in Oxford.
Mason, of Gore Road in Otisfield, faces additional charges in connection with the case of attempted unlawful sexual contact, terrorizing and violating a condition of release.
Michael E. Harbovetz, 32, of 1 Cummings Place, Norway, was indicted on one count of gross sexual assault, alleging he engaged in a sexual act on July 23 in Norway with a woman who suffered from a mental disability.
The indictment states that the disability should have been apparent to Harbovetz, and that the woman was “substantially incapable of appraising the nature of the contact involved, or understanding that (she) had the right to deny or withdraw consent.”
Harbovetz is being held in the Oxford County Jail, awaiting his arraignment next month in the case.
Mason, who previously lived in Porter, was convicted of gross sexual assault on May 6, 1997, in Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland. His name and photo are listed in the Maine Sex Offender Registry kept by the Maine State Police.
