ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) – Lawyer Milloy is trying to make up for lost time.
As impressive as the Buffalo Bills safety has been in his last five games since recovering from a broken right forearm, Milloy is disappointed he had to miss any time at all.
“With me back in the lineup being able to contribute it is bittersweet,” said Milloy, who missed the first five games of the season. “It’s a humbling experience to have been out for the first time in my career.”
What bothers Milloy most is a feeling that he could’ve made a difference in preventing Buffalo from losing its first four games of the season.
The Bills (4-6) have been much improved with Milloy back, winning three of their last five heading into Sunday’s game at Seattle.
“I don’t think that’s purely coincidence,” quarterback Drew Bledsoe said. “He’s one of those special players that can actually elevate the guys around him. He brings such great intensity and such great accountability to the defense that I think definitely helps.”
Bledsoe is very familiar with Milloy, as the two were teammates during Milloy’s first six seasons at New England. This is Milloy’s second year with Buffalo since the Patriots released him just prior to the start of last season.
A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Milloy has been on a tear since he returned, and appears not bothered by a carbon fiber cast he wears to protect his surgically repaired forearm.
In five games, Milloy has been credited with 56 tackles, three sacks, one interception and named this past week’s AFC defensive player of the week. All three sacks came in Buffalo’s 37-17 win against St. Louis on Sunday, allowing him to become only the fourth Bills defensive back to register a multiple-sack game since 1970.
He ranks second among NFL defensive backs in sacks this season. And the Bills have registered 16 of their 27 sacks since Milloy’s return, and are now 11 short of matching last year’s total.
“Just doing my part,” Milloy said. “I got my number called and got it done.”
His return has allowed the Bills to be more creative on defense, given Milloy’s versatility in being able to both defend against the pass and the run.
“He wreaks havoc,” coach Mike Mularkey said. “The tempo in practice rises when he steps on the field.”
Milloy will enjoy somewhat of a homecoming this weekend, having played college at Washington. Because of a quirk in NFL scheduling, this will be his first game against the Seahawks.
“I’m really anxious. I probably have about 50 tickets. It might end up being 75,” Milloy said. “I want to go play well. But I’ve got to make sure I don’t go out there and press. I’ve got to stay in the scheme of things and get this victory.”
