PORTLAND (AP) – Brooks Laich scored the game-winning goal during a sudden-death shootout as the Portland Pirates defeated the Norfolk Admirals 2-1.

After a scoreless overtime period, each team hit the net once during the five-man shootout, but Laich beat Norfolk goaltender Michael Leighton on his first attempt after the format switched to sudden-death.

The Admirals (11-7-1-2) took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission when Rene Bourque scored at 13:04 of the first period. The Pirates (9-8-1-2) tied it when Laich netted a goal 2:05 into the second period.

Portland goalie Maxime Ouellet made 30 saves to earn the win, while Leighton tallied 29 saves.
