CASTINE – The Maine Maritime Academy will host an open house for prospective students and their parents on Saturday, Dec. 11. Registration will take place in the Student Center from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. A continental breakfast and lunch are free to all participants.
Jeffrey C. Wright, director of admissions, and other college officers will conduct programs on academic majors, extracurricular activities and options in student lifestyles. Academy representatives will also lead tours of the campus and the training vessel. Financial aid advice and admissions interviews will also be available. Nonprofit event
PORTLAND – Nonprofit board members and executives of not-for-profit organizations in Maine can attend a free roundtable discussion to learn about what is happening in the nonprofit environment concerning governance and other key issues.
Many nonprofits are adopting “best practices” based on the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation to help manage the risks of fiduciary liability and to preserve reputations. The session will cover topics such as executive compensation, financial transparency and a variety of governance issues.
Hank Schmelzer, president and CEO of the Maine Community Foundation will facilitate the discussion. Panel members will include attorneys Gregory Fryer and Emily Kahn from Verrill Dana, certified public accountant Linda Roberts from Berry, Dunn, McNeil and Parker and insurance consultant Scott Simmonds.
