WATERVILLE – Michael Westbrooks scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds while Patrick McGowan finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists, leading Colby College to an 80-42 victory over Newbury College in men’s basketball Tuesday.
McGowan was 8-for-12 from the field, while Westbrooks shot 9-for-14.
Colby led at halftime as Westbrooks scored 10 points and snatched nine rebounds at the break.
Jared Cushman had nine points and four rebounds for Colby.
Jamie Snyder-Fair added seven points and Nick Farrell dished out six assists. Arch Mitchell paced Newbury with 20 points. Walky Magliore had nine.
St. Joe’s 77, Lyndon State 68
STANDISH – Chad Pulkkinen drained 19 points, pacing St. Joseph’s to a 77-68 triumph over Lyndon State Tuesday in men’s basketball action.
Noah LeRoche added 12 points, six assists, and four steals while Jon Pratt and Pat Mileski combined for 22 points for the Monks (2-2).
Kevin Trask netted 22 points for the Lyndon State. Chris Brown added 14 points and six assists.
Women’s basketball
St. Joe’s 54, Lyndon State 45
STANDISH – Laura Pelkey and Margaret Blauvelt each scored 12 points as St. Joseph’s posted a 54-45 win over Lyndon State Tuesday in women’s basketball.
Along with 12 points, Blauvelt also recorded five steals. Val Dumais added six points, five steals, and four assists for the Monks’ (1-3) first win of the season.
Lyndon State’s (4-1) effort was paced by Jamie Rosso with a game-high 14 points and four steals, while Rachel Maxwell added 12.
CMCC 59, NHTI 46
AUBURN – Katherine Vincent netted a game-high 21 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead Central Maine Community College to a 59-46 victory in women’s basketball action.
Ashley Swett chipped in for the Mustangs (3-2) with 16 points, which put her over the prestigious 1,000 mark in career stats. Jen Roy led the Capitals (6-2) with 11 points, while Christine Peak added 10. The Mustangs held a 31-22 advantage at the half and were never seriously challenged.
Bowdoin 63, USM 55
BRUNSWICK – Katie Cummings and Eileen Flaherty netted 13 points apiece to lead Bowdoin to a 63-55 win over the University of Southern Maine in a battle of two top-ranked women’s basketball teams Tuesday night.
Justine Pouravelis and Alison Smith chipped in nine points apiece for the Polar Bears (4-0).
Megan Myles led the Huskies (2-2) with a game-high 17 point effort, while Amanda Bryant chipped in with 10. Bowdoin held a 26-14 advantage at the half and put the game well out of reach with a 37-point second half.
Men’s hockey
USM 4, Plymouth 1
GORHAM – Brian Collins and Mike Stevens each had a goal and an assist to propel the University of Southern Maine to a 4-1 victory over Plymouth State College in men’s hockey action Tuesday.
Collins scored what proved to be the game-winner when he lit the lamp at 9:04 of the second period while the Huskies (2-2-1) enjoyed a 5-on-3 power play. He later assisted on Stevens’ power-play goal late in the third period. Ryan Sullivan made 26 saves in net for USM.
Chris Cadieux scored the Panthers’ (2-4-1) lone goal when he pounded home a rebound at 7:32 of the third period. Karl Helgesson played a strong game in net for the Panthers with 37 saves on the night.
