After falling slightly then holding steady for two weeks, home energy costs are inching upward again.

Monday’s state survey of fuel dealers found a statewide average for No. 2 heating oil of $1.97, up a penny from a week earlier.

Kerosene also rose a penny, to $2.25 per gallon on average. Propane rose 2 cents per gallon, to $2.03.

The figures are “almost 50 percent higher than they were last year at this time,” noted the State Planning Office. The office conducts the weekly survey from October through March.

The highest price for No. 2 – $2.09 per gallon – was being charged in western Maine, the office found. The low, $1.80, was offered by a dealer in southern Maine.

About 80 percent of Maine’s homes are heated with No. 2. The fuel had topped $2 per gallon for a couple of weeks in late October before falling back to between $1.90 and $2.
