RUMFORD – Ernest M. White Sr., 80, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the Rumford Hospital, Rumford.

A resident of the area all his life, he resided on Oxford Avenue in Rumford.

He was born in East Andover on Dec. 29, 1923, a son of Isaac and Anna (Mae) White, and had attended Andover schools.

During World War II, he served with the United States Army as a Tec 5, Co. C., 166th Engineer Combat Battalion overseas; including Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe and had received the Bronze Star Medal.

He worked as a lumberman and lumber truck driver most of his life for Frances Scott & David Enman Lumber Operations until retirement in the mid 1970s.

He was formerly a member of the Dixfield American Legion Post and the Robert Shand Post 1641, VFW in Rumford.

He was married to Gladys Mae Williams in 1946. She died in 1959.

He was then married in Dixfield, May 23, 1981, to the former June Dailey, who died in Lewiston on Nov. 11, 1998.

Survivors include daughters; Joanne Palmer, of Andover, and Bonnie Jean Merchant, of Rumford.; sons, Ernest White Jr. and wife, Mattie, of Rumford, Paul White and wife, Miriam, of Orrington, Fred White Sr., of Rumford, Chester White and wife, Ruth, of Dixfield, Gregory White, of Newport, N.H., and Richard White, of Gorham; brothers, Claude White, of Norway, and Frank White and wife, Mariann, of East Hartford, Conn.; sisters, Emma Giroux, of Rumford, Arline Dewar, of Mexico, Juliette Salatino and husband, Rocky, of Rumford, Evelyn Leclerc and husband, David, of Rumford, Alice Gagne, of East Hartford, Conn., and Roberta Touchette, of Mexico, Grace Jamison and husband, Charles, of Rumford; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sons, Austin and Thomas.
