Farwell School: It was a short walk from Newman Street, a neighborhood where we spent a majority of our school years. We recall our neighbors, the Katzes, the Bourques, the Lebels, the Shulmans, Lessards, Caouettes and the Parottas, looking after one another. We twins remember walking to Farwell with our older brother, along with the Butlers who lived next door. We remember coming home for lunch and returning to school for the afternoon. Oh, the joys of a neighborhood school. We treasure them now.
As wide-eyed, just-turned-5-year-olds, we entered the halls of Farwell School. In 1959, it was a bright and cheerful place. In Mrs. Wait’s “sub-primary” (That’s what it was called back then.), there was a large colorful circle of tiles on the floor, A, B, C’s and 1, 2, 3’s on the wall, and a piano in the classroom. It was the beginning of an adventure. Throughout the years, there were the “lawn parties,” the Pumpkin Festival and the play “Rip Van Winkle” performed by fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders.
On Dec. 7, ALL Lewiston voters have an opportunity to help create a new generation of memories by voting “yes” on the two questions that will begin a new adventure of building a new Farwell School. It is important to note that the Multi-Purpose Center will be the one voting place where all registered Lewiston voters will cast their ballots. As Farwell alumni, we ask you to vote “yes” for a new Farwell.
