LEWISTON – With no traditional local round robin tournament this year at the Colisee, high school hockey fans will have a chance to see what two local teams – Lewiston and St. Dom’s – have in store for the upcoming season when they take to the ice Friday and Saturday in the Bishop’s Cup Tournament.
“This is a good opportunity to see some good hockey being played,” said St. Dom’s coach Bob Boucher. “Both nights you should see two really good games.”
Friday night’s action includes a non-countable game between two teams expected to be among the top five Class A teams in Maine this year, Lewiston and Cheverus. The two met in the state final game in 2002, with Lewiston winning in the third overtime.
St. Dom’s will face Trinity of Manchester, New Hampshire in the other Friday night game.
“The games will still help us make a final cut for our varsity team,” said Boucher. “The regular season starts in a week, so it’s important to get everything settled.”
Last season, Cape Elizabeth played in Lewiston’s place, and Saturday’s matchups may include a Lewiston-St. Dom’s game. The two traditional rivals that have combined for 45 state titles are scheduled to meet twice this year in the regular season.
“The last time they were in the tournament we didn’t meet,” said Boucher. “No matter who gets into what game, though, it should be two really good nights of hockey.”
Lewiston returns more than two lines of forwards and three or four solid defensemen to go with two experienced goaltenders, while St. Dom’s returned its entire blue line and two All-State-caliber forwards in Tyler Martin and Jon Rutt.
