The Bates Outing Club is the second-oldest, largest and one of the most active collegiate outing clubs in the country.

Founded in 1920, the club plans weekend activities, including hiking, cycling, canoeing and skiing trips to such sites as Mount Katahdin, Acadia National Park and Sunday River and to New Hampshire’s Mount Washington. The club also co-sponsors the college’s annual winter carnival.

The club takes an interest in issues affecting the environment. Members have held workshops on such topics as nuclear power and energy conservation.

In addition, the Outing Club maintains 15 miles of the Appalachian Trail and loans camping and outdoor sporting equipment to members of the Bates community.
