Goals continued to be hard to come by for the Lewiston Maineiacs.

After scoring once against Moncton 24 hours earlier, Lewiston was blanked by Halifax in a 5-0 win for the Mooseheads on Saturday at the Halifax Metro Centre.

Jason Churchill earn first star honors, turning aside 29 Lewiston shots to backstop Halifax to the victory and hand the Maineiacs its second loss in as many nights.

The win moved Halifax to fifth overall in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League standings while the Maineiacs remained 13th.

“He came up with a few key saves early,” said Lewiston assistant coach Ed Harding. “We didn’t drive the net like we should have, and we didn’t get the pucks on net like we should.”

Lewiston coach Clem Jodoin was unavailable for comment.

Halifax put 46 shots on Lewiston goaltender Jonathan Bernier, whose record dropped to 2-7-3. The Mooseheads scored two power play goals in the first two periods and added three more tallies in the final stanza.

Rane Carnegie, Marc-Andre Bernier and Alexandre Picard each had a goal and an assist for the Mooseheads.

“We followed the game plan, and we were playing hard,” said Harding. “We were getting the body on body, and we did the things we should be doing, but it was kind of demoralizing when they got the third goal in the third period.”

Halifax scored at 12:42 of the first period on a Carnegie power-play goal for his 12th of the year. It was the second straight night the Maineiacs fell behind early.

“They took advantage of it,” said Harding. “We were down on a five-on-three. That turned the momentum a little bit. There was a scrum, and we ended up getting penalized two players.”

In the second, at 7:42, Bernier scored on the man advantage for his 13th of the season.

Halifax had only outshot Lewiston 27-21 through two periods, but two quick goals early in the third broke things open. The Maineiacs were outshot 19-8 in the final period.

“They got the third one and then a little bit after that, they got the second one and that was all she wrote,” said Harding.

Ryan Hillier scored his first of the season at 3:53 of the third. Just 39 seconds later, Picard scored for a 4-0 lead. James Pouliot added his first of the season at 8:37.

Lewiston finishes its trip to the Maritimes today with a late afternoon game at Prince Edward Island, the fourth-ranked team in the Atlantic Division behind Moncton, Halifax and Cape Breton.
