On Tuesday, voters should approve construction of a new Farwell Elementary School in Lewiston, as we’ve urged.
It’s a busy time of year, with this special election sandwiched between Thanksgiving and Christmas. But on this matter, there should be a broad consensus.
A “yes” vote will leverage an amazing opportunity to build a new school at very little cost to the city and its taxpayers. The school is old, outdated and inadequate – and the state has agreed to pay all but about $30,000 of the replacement cost. Just maintaining the current structure would likely cost the city $150,000 a year without ever bringing it up to standards.
There are two questions on Tuesday’s ballot. The first asks voters to approve spending $10.7 million on the school, of which the city would be responsible for paying only $33,500.
The second asks for an additional $566,187 to include a larger, middle-school size gym in the project. That would create a new public space for the community by providing much-needed indoor recreational facilities.
Voters should take the time on Tuesday to vote yes on Question 1 and 2.
