“Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and to humbly implore His protection and favor” is the opening statement of President George Washington’s first Thanksgiving proclamation. The founding fathers wanted us to give thanks to Almighty God.

The tradition of giving thanks to God has continued even to this day. For example, President Clinton said, “Out of our right and proper rejoicing on Thanksgiving Day, let us give our own thanks to God.”

Unfortunately, public school children are seldom being taught this history because of the fear of a federal lawsuit from the ACLU. The ACLU has effectively coerced public schools into accepting its warped interpretation of the establishment clause. In response to this, a federal lawsuit has recently been filed to overturn a California school’s decision to forbid children to read federal documents, including the Declaration of Independence.

It is a sad day when a lawsuit is needed to keep public schools from censoring our children’s reading of primary sources of American history.
