NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Bates College posted an 80-74 victory over Norwich to claim the championship of the Ed Hockenbury Classic.
Trailing 45-44 at the end of the first half, the Bobcats made a run behind the hot hand of Zac Ray, who finished with 20 points. John Furbush chipped in with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the undefeated Bobcats.
Ray was named the tournament MVP.
Colby 77, Thomas 60
WATERVILLE – Michael Westerbrooks drained 16 of his game-high 17 points in the first half to propel Colby to a 77-60 win over Thomas.
The White Mules (5-1) jumped out to a 38-14 lead at the inmtermission and led by as many as 30 points in the second half.
Patrick McGowan chipped in with 12 points in the victory. Andrew Woodbury led Thomas with 11 points, while Josh Beard added 10 points in the loss.
Husson 80, Mount Ida 66
BANGOR – Buddy Leavitt drained a team-high 21 points to lead Husson to an 80-66 win over Mount Ida .
Travis Peterson and Jeff White added 11 points apiece for the Braves (1-3).
Curtis Gadles scored a game-high 26 points and Andress Vasiliu added 16 points.
CMCC 88, Vt. Tech 80
RANDOLF, Vt. – Patrick Dempsey scored a game-high 31 points to lead Central Maine Community College to a 88-80 win over Vermont Tech.
Chris Brackett poured in 21 for the Mustangs, while teammates Mike Graham, Kaleb Violette and John Gilson added 10 points apiece. Chris Taft paced Vermont with 20 points.
CMCC built a 42-40 halftime lead.
Women’s hoop
UMF 80, Wheelock 32
FARMINGTON – University of Maine at Farmington jumped out to a 45-12 lead at the end of the first half en route to an 80-32 rout of Wheelock in women’s basketball action.
Fourteen different players scored for UMF. Danielle Mayer and Kari Simpson each shared the scoring honors with 11 points apiece for the Beavers (4-1).
Wheelock was paced by Amy Ross with a game-high 17 points.
Bates 69, St. Joseph’s 47
STANDISH – Bates outscored St. Joseph’s 15-2 in the first nine minutes of the game en route to a 69-47 victory in the championship game of the Merry Monk Women’s Basketball Tournament.
Olivia Zurkek led the Bobcats with a double-double, pouring in 15 points and hauling down 14 boards for the nationally-ranked Bobcats.
Mount Ida 74, Husson 69
BANGOR – Kristen Santos poured in 21 points to lift Mount Ida to a 74-69 win over Husson.
Crystal Martin tallied 20 points to pace the Braves (2-3) attack and Annie McIntosh chipped in with 13 points.
