NORWAY – Chester Vernon Adams, 75, of Stoneham, died unexpectedly at Stephen’s Memorial Hospital, Norway, on Dec. 5.

Born in North Lovell, March 31, 1929, to Jesse and Bessie (Flint) Adams, he worked for many years for Dwight Grover in his sawmill before he moved to Center Lovell and was a caretaker for many homes, some of which he still cared for.

He was past-president of Kezar Lake Sportsmen’s Club and worked for many years on the original Lovell Old Home Days and the annual chicken barbecue. He loved to hunt and fish and spent many years as a Maine guide, as did his father and brothers. He was a very active member of the Lovell Lion’s Club and the World’s Fair Association.

He always attended or contributed to the benefit suppers and was quick to offer to drive people to appointments of just the store. Most days you would find him working on his huge wood piles or delivering truckloads of wood. In the winter he enjoyed selling bait and talking to his early morning customers. His biggest wish was “that people would just get along, enjoy each other and once in a while, tell a little joke.” His favorite poem was “The Man in the Mirror.” He enjoyed his Wednesday night poker games in his garage and was delighted when the Red Sox finally won! He loved going to Country Sundays and playing cards with his wife, Betty and whoever cared to join in. He loved all of his children, grandchildren and his cat Gi-Gi and was greatly entertained by them all.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Tuttle Adams, of Stoneham; his daughter, Cheryl Adams-Callen and her husband, Rod of Stoneham; his daughter, Dorene Adams and husband, Dave Gillerlain of Keene, N.H.; grandchildren, Shelly Bennett Mathias of Stoneham, Crissy Millett Josselyn of Manchester, N.J., and Nicholas Lausier of Keene, N.H.; and five great-grandchildren, the sixth to be born in March.

He is also survived by three loving stepchildren; Debbie Merrill and her husband, Woody of Harrison, Jerry Tuttle and his wife, Patty, of Bridgton, and Ken Tuttle of Massachusetts; grandchildren, Nathan, Eli, Melissa, Joshua, Elizabeth, Jade, Jasmyn and Levi; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Littlefield Adams in 1977, his parents, and all of his brothers and sisters; Paul, Ernest, Winfield, Arthur and Howard Adams, Marion Smith, and on Dec. 4 this year, Eunice Grover. Chester was the last on the “Adams Cannonball.”
