LEEDS – Frederick “Fred” Perry Brown, 79, of Leeds, died Friday, Dec. 3, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, unexpectedly during cardiac surgery.

Born in Lynn, Mass., June 15, 1925, the son of Frederick and Henrietta (Cooke) Brown, Fred attended Swampscott High School, but suspended his education to serve in the Navy during World War II, serving for three years.

He returned home and attended Burdette College and received a business degree. He then went to work at General Electric, in Lynn, as a payroll supervisor, retiring after 36 years.

He married Alice Broughton, of Marblehead, Mass., in 1951. They resided in Swampscott, where they raised their three children.

In 1971, they moved to Middleton, Mass., where they resided until Fred’s retirement. They then moved to their vacation home in Wayne and later to Leeds.

He was a past commander of American Legion Post 227 in Middleton, Mass., then transferred to Post 40 in Winthrop, for a total of 53 years.

He was very proud of receiving his high school diploma from Swampscott High School in 2000, a program which he went on to initiate in Maine for veterans of World War II who left high school prior to graduation.

He was also very active in the General Electric Down East Retirement Association. He served as treasurer, president and membership chairman. He enjoyed spending time with all of his grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan, following the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. He also enjoyed the former Boston “Atlanta” Braves and the Washington Redskins. He was an avid gardener and took pride in the upkeep of his yard. He was looking forward to another winter in Myrtle Beach S.C., where he leaves many friends.

He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Alice; his daughters, Donna O’Rourke of Danvers, Mass., and Joyce Belakonis of Dover, N.H.; a son, Christopher Brown and his wife, Diana, of Wayne; his grandchildren, Shanna O’Rourke and her partner, Jake Miller, Ryan O’Rourke, Beth Farrer, Joseph Belakonis and his partner, Anne Gouzoules, and Jennifer, Christopher and Daniel Brown.
