NORWAY – An estimated 300 to 400 gallons of kerosene spilled on Crockett Ridge Road after a fuel truck tipped over Monday, according to police.

Norway Patrolman Scott Laliberte said the truck went off the road about 10:30 a.m. Timothy Warren, of 39 North Raymond Road, North Raymond, was driving the vehicle north when “he got one wheel up over the shoulder and he was off into the ditch,” Laliberte said.

The fuel tank was punctured by a stone wall as the truck came to rest on its side, he said.

Although the truck was painted with a “Gabriel Oil” logo, the Bridgton Office Manager for Lampron Energy said Monday her company purchased the former New Gloucester business. It was not unusual, then, that a Lampron Energy truck was on the scene to pump oil from the damaged truck into its tank.

The office manager, who asked that her name not be published, also said Warren drove off the road while trying to make room for an oncoming car.

William and Tammy Little live directly across the street from the accident scene at 518 Crockett Ridge Road. The couple said they were sitting on the couch when the truck slid into the ditch, making a loud grinding noise. The driver had already radioed for help before they offered their assistance, they said.

Because kerosene was leaking from the truck, both the Norway Fire Department and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection responded to the scene, Laliberte said. The Fire Department helped to contain the leak and used large absorbent pads to soak up some of the kerosene. Laliberte said the DEP was expected to haul any contaminated soil or materials from the site for disposal in Scarborough or Saco.

Workers were still at the scene at 12:45 p.m., he said.
