EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Jason Kidd made his season debut and assisted on Richard Jefferson’s game-winning jumper from the lane with 7.1 seconds left as the New Jersey Nets defeated the Toronto Raptors 88-86 Monday night.

After sitting out the first 16 games recovering from left knee surgery, Kidd had 10 points, six rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes with the Nets restricting his playing time.

Jefferson had 26 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for the Nets, who began the night in last place in the Atlantic Division after winning only four of their first 16 games with Kidd sidelined.

Vince Carter had 22 points for Toronto, but he missed a driving layup just before the final buzzer that would have sent the game to overtime. Chris Bosh added 15 points.

Hawks 96, 76ers 92

ATLANTA – Josh Smith scored the tie-breaking basket off an offensive rebound with 17.6 seconds remaining, then blocked a shot to preserve the lead as the Atlanta Hawks snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 96-92 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night.

One day after turning 19, the teenager was a major reason the Hawks won for only the third time in 17 games this season, overcoming a season-high 36 points by Allen Iverson.

The 76ers squandered an 11-point lead in the first half, losing their fifth in a row against a team that had dropped its two previous games by an average of 22.5 points.

Spurs 91, Bulls 75

CHICAGO – Tony Parker put on a show for his family, Tim Duncan had his 16th double-double of the year and the San Antonio Spurs overcame a sloppy effort to beat the Chicago Bulls 91-75 on Monday night for their eighth straight win.

Parker had a team-high 17 points and five assists, while Duncan finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Manu Ginobili and Devin Brown added 12 each, and Malik Rose had 11.

Though the victory improved the Spurs to an NBA-best 16-3, this certainly wasn’t their best showing.

They had 21 turnovers, two shy of their season high, and shot less than 41 percent. Duncan was just 4-of-12 from the floor. Fortunately for the Spurs they were playing the Bulls, who have beaten San Antonio just once in their last 13 meetings.

Tyson Chandler had another solid effort with 17 points and 12 rebounds, his fifth double-double, but the rest of the Bulls struggled. Chicago shot less than 40 percent, and Luol Deng was the only starter to reach double figures with 13 points. Kirk Hinrich didn’t score until the third quarter.

and Eddy Curry again looked lost when being picked on by someone his own size, finishing with six points and one rebound in just 13 minutes.
