PARIS – An Andover man was convicted Tuesday on a reduced charge of vandalism stemming from an incident in which he reportedly attacked a pickup truck with an ax and pipe.
Charles A. Gaura Jr., 20, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief in Oxford County Superior Court.
Judge Ellen Gorman sentenced him to 90 days in the county jail. The time is to be served consecutively with an earlier sentencing on a probation violation.
Gaura was also ordered to pay $2,400 in restitution.
He was initially arrested on Aug. 5 after an investigation into a 911 report of three men smashing a truck, using axes and pipes.
According to the arresting officer’s account, the attack was in retaliation for an incident the night before, during which one of the three men accused the victim of smashing one of their vehicles.
Gaura also accused the victim of breaking into cars and camps, and allegedly beating up one of his friends a year ago, the investigation report stated.
Gaura had originally been indicted on a Class C felony charge of aggravated criminal mischief. But it was amended and downgraded on Oct. 6 to a misdemeanor by the deletion of language in the indictment, which stated that damage exceeded $2,000.
