I know that not everyone supports the war on terrorism. But I believe all should be involved in the war against poverty.

God bless the U.S. Marine Corps. Not only are the they the fiercest fighting force this world has ever known, but they also display a heart of compassion that is second to none.

In 1947, the Toys for Tots program began and, for the last 57 years, it has been the goal of the Marines not only to provide a toy for a needy child at Christmas, but to deliver a message of hope which will build self-esteem and motivate children to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic and community-minded citizens.

With military cutbacks in the 1980s and ’90s, the trauma this nation experienced as a result of the Sept. 11 attacks, the economic downturns and the anthrax scare in 2001, not to mention the current war on terrorism, one might get the impression that the world has gone to hell in a handbasket. This has not stopped the U.S. Marine Corps and its battle against poverty. The Marines continue to be selfless crusaders of compassion.

It is my prayer, this holiday season, that this community will recognize their service. Not only abroad, but also here at home. Let’s hear it. Three cheers for the U.S. Marines.
