Every so often, the luck of the draw comes up with an interesting combination of numbers.

Take Tuesday’s Pick 4 state lottery. The winning combination was 9999. That seems like a number that could have a lot of players. And that seems as if the state could be hit for a bundle.

Not so, says Rich Sperlazzi, the Maine State Lottery’s marketing director.

For one thing, Sperlazzi says, the lottery commission limits the number of Pick 4 tickets it will sell for any single number to a maximum payout of $200,000. Once that payout figure is reached, the computers will no longer accept the number being bet.

After that, Sperlazzi said, “It’s sold out.”

“Very few numbers ever hit the limit,” he added.

But some numbers are favored.

“One-two-three-four is popular” among Pick 4 players. “One-two-three-four-five-six is popular for Megabucks,” he said.

As for Tuesday’s 9999, well, the state stands to pay out $25,425, said Sperlazzi. Ten players will claim $2,500 each.
