ELLSWORTH – The Maine Community Foundation is requesting proposals from nonprofits and community groups for its Community Building Grant Program, which supports projects that capitalize on community strengths to address current and future issues.

Grant applications are reviewed by committees of local volunteers. Grant awards are up to $7,500. The next deadline for applications is Jan. 15, with awards announced in late March.

A statewide organization with offices in Ellsworth and Portland, the foundation works to build philanthropic resources and make effective grants to strengthen Maine communities.

Presented awards

AUGUSTA – At the annual Blaine House Tea held Nov. 18 in honor of National Home Care and Hospice Month, the Home Care Alliance of Maine recognized three volunteers with a presentation of Home Care and Hospice Volunteer Awards.

The following individuals were selected to receive the awards to honor their commitment and dedication as volunteers: Nancy Ludwig of Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care and Hospice and Nora Morris of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice were presented with the Home Care Volunteer Award. Edwina Hardy of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice received the Hospice Volunteer Award.

Needs volunteers

TOPSHAM – Flying Changes Center for Therapeutic Riding is seeking volunteers for its winter programs. The center provides services to children and adults of all ages who deal with physical, mental health or cognitive challenges.

People experienced with horses are needed to work in lessons as horse leaders as well as for assistance with equine care.

Training is provided for individuals who are interested in learning about and participating in the care of horses and/or as a side walker in lessons.

Other opportunities include data entry (Apple), support with fund-raising and coordination of fund-raising events. Time commitment is generally about two hours minimum a week and volunteer help in needed both weekdays and weekends.

The center is located on Route 201. High school students seeking to meet a volunteering requirement are welcome.
