WINTHROP – Jean E. Fontaine, 80, of Highland Avenue, died Thursday, Dec. 9, at Nicholson’s Long-term Care and Rehab Center, Winthrop.
She was born in Livermore Falls on Feb. 3, 1924, the daughter of Laurin and Lena Wagner Rhodenizer.
She graduated from Livermore Falls High School, Colby College in 1946, and obtained her master’s degree in English from the University of Maine, Orono.
She taught English for many years in Cape Elizabeth, Mount Blue and Winthrop, and continued to substitute teach after her retirement.
She enjoyed reading, quilting, gardening and traveling, especially her trips to England and Ireland.
She was a member of the Maine State Retired Teachers Association and Phi Beta Kappa.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Raymond H. Fontaine, of Winthrop; a son, Raymond J. Fontaine of East Livermore; a daughter, Carmen Persichini of Avon, Mass.; a brother, Richard Rhodenizer of Scotia, N.Y.; two sisters, Greta Gordon of Winthrop, and Constance Knight of Moultonborough, N.H.; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother, Harold Rhodenizer.
