LEWISTON – The Red Sox victory tour will bypass the Twin Cities next week when the World Series trophy comes to Maine.
After a few not-yet-announced players bring the trophy to Portland on Friday, it will take a road trip to Augusta, Bangor and Presque Isle.
No stop in Lewiston or Auburn.
When state Sen. Peggy Rotundo found out, “I went ballistic,” she said Friday.
“These folks are going right past Lewiston, two times. It’s like, Hello!’ It’s just not acceptable for Lewiston-Auburn, the second largest population area in Maine, to be overlooked,” said the Lewiston Democrat.
The governor’s office is trying to persuade the Red Sox to add Lewiston-Auburn to the Maine swing.
“The governor is worried that if they don’t stop in Lewiston, every citizen there will go out and buy Yankees hats,” Baldacci spokesman Lee Umphrey said Friday. “We are doing everything we can on this to get the Red Sox and their trophy to Lewiston.”
The Red Sox organization came up with the list of Maine cities and towns to visit. Adding L-A to that list is important, Rotundo said.
“For years and years, people here have been waiting to see that trophy,” she said, adding that there was much Red Sox fever in the community during the World Series. “A lot of people have been waiting for this for a long, long time.”
As planned so far, trophy viewing will happen in Portland on Friday, Dec. 17; and in Presque Isle, Bangor and Augusta on Dec. 18. In Augusta, the Blaine House will host an open house.
Rotundo hopes plans will change so that local folks’ best view won’t be of a Red Sox bus driving past the Lewiston and Auburn turnpike exits.
“I’ve made it clear to the governor that he will never hear the end of it from me if Lewiston-Auburn is left out,” Rotundo said.
On Friday, talks between the governor’s office and the Red Sox encouraged the Sox to expand their schedule to include Lewiston-Auburn, Umphrey said. “They were receptive,” but did not commit. Talks will continue Monday, Umphrey said.
