FARMINGTON – Northfield, the eight-member a capella group from the Farmington area, will present a concert of seasonal music and various other vocal works Dec. 18 and 19.
They will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at the North Vienna Methodist Church on the Tower Road.
Northfield has been charming local audiences for almost 25 years with their sweet harmonies. They love to share their blend of Medieval and Renaissance music from Europe and Early American hymn tunes.
They will sing in English, French, Spanish, Italian and Latin, in pieces from the 1500s through to the 20th century. There will be a mixture from some of the great composers and some lively, simple folk melodies. Music of Bach along with American folk hymns will be shared along with the Christmas story of the Three Kings will be retold in a song from renaissance Spain. Heart breaking madrigals of love will lead to lively songs of merry making. There will be music by Palestrina, Sweelinck, Bach, Monteverdi, William Billings and one of the founding fathers of the town of Farmington: Supply Belcher.
Northfield was recently featured in the UMF Community Chorus “Variety is the Spice of Life” concert, and in March 2005, they will travel to Ellsworth to participate in the Downeast A Capella Festival. Northfield has been singing, with various members, for 25 years. They are not professional musicians, but a group of friends who love to sing together and bring smiles to the faces of audiences everywhere they perform.
The Farmington concert is sponsored by the Arts Institute of Western Maine, an affiliate of the University of Maine at Farmington. Admission to the concert in Farmington is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, children under 16 are free. Admission in North Vienna is by donation.
