The motto of the city of Lewiston’s police department is to protect and serve. However, when I called Lewiston police to have unauthorized vehicles towed, they said they could not do this because it was private property.

I certainly don’t call that serving the community. It should be within their rights as law enforcement officers to uphold the laws of all citizens, not just a few, and be able to tow any unauthorized vehicles from places they should not be whether it is private property or not.

Also, the police really need to look at parking enforcement within the city.

There should be no parking allowed on both sides of Ash Street, between Pierce Street and Blake Street. It is very narrow through that area and yet the city allows parking on both sides, and with the current parking in that area, it is very hazardous there.

With winter now upon us, the city also needs to look at the option of the parking ban as well. With the tenement buildings in this city, there is nowhere enough winter parking available in the area. The city really needs to consider having a parking ban only in cases of snow removal, such as Portland and other large areas statewide do.

Editor’s note: Towing unauthorized vehicles from private property is the responsibility of the owner or property manager, according to Maine law.
