LEWISTON – Eugene Rowe, 84, of 71 Spring St., Auburn, died of cancer, on Monday, Dec. 13, at Central Maine Medical Center.

Born March 26, 1920, in West Minot, he was the son of the late Merton E. Rowe and Etta Hodges Rowe. He attended the one-room schoolhouse in West Minot, graduated in 1936 as valedictorian of Buckfield High School, and attended Hebron Academy for one post-graduate year. After serving in the United States Army Air Corps in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines, during World War ll, he attended the University of Maine in Orono under the G.I. Bill.

He married Susie F. Giddinge of Minot, on Dec. 4, 1940. He worked as a mechanical engineer on precision inspection of government contracts at various locations in Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. After retirement, he and his wife traveled briefly throughout the United States. He was a former president of the New England Astrological Society.

They lived in Oxford for 17 years, before moving to Heritage Court in Auburn, in 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Susie, of 64 years, who is a resident of d’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston; three daughters, Beverly Spofford of Hebron, Frances and her husband, Paul Lodge of West Minot, Sally and her husband, John F. Joy of Augusta; one son, Theodore Rowe and his wife, Jackie Chan of Quincy, Massachusetts; nine grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Johnson, of Bristol, Conn.; and an infant sister, Sadie Rowe.
