GREENE – Public hearings on a new 10-year cable TV franchise agreement and changes to the waste disposal ordinance are set for early next year.
Town Manager Steve Eldridge announced that the hearings are set for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 10.
Greene plans to make alterations to its cable TV ordinance and to suggest ideas for better service from Adelphia. A copy of the proposals will be available for residents to read Dec. 20. Eldridge said that once the public and selectmen approve the ordinance, alterations could be put into a franchise agreement.
The franchise agreement gives Adelphia permission to run its wires through town, and, depending on growth, allows the possibility that the town can receive a percentage of the company’s profit.
The town proposes to use its share to upgrade technology for its local public broadcast station and to extend service.
“A lot of the new subdivisions in Greene don’t have cable,” Eldridge said.
The town has linked its franchise agreement with Leeds, Turner, Sabattus and Wales, and plans to meet with those towns so all of them will benefit from the changes.
Greene’s cable contract expired last year; the new will be for 10 years.
The town is also proposing changes to the transfer station ordinance. The town has spent $47,460 this year to dispose of construction debris.
“That includes the hauling and the tipping fees,” Eldridge said. “We could save approximately $50,000 a year by eliminating construction debris at the station.”
In other news, Road Foreman Kevin Doyle has posted his resignation and announced that his last day will be Friday. Doyle, who has been employed with the town for eight years, has been offered a position in New Gloucester and will be replaced temporarily by senior Public Works employee Doris Guenette.
“We also have two three-year selectmen position openings occurring soon,” Eldridge said. The terms of Selectmen Mark Christman and Maurice Levasseur will end soon. Eldridge said that people interested in running need to submit an application and 25 signatures before Jan. 18. Levasseur will not seek re-election, but Christman will, he said.
The town will say farewell to Eldridge at the next board meeting Dec. 27 at the Volunteer Fire Department. Selectmen Chairman Ron Grant said all are welcome to attend the 7 p.m. event. There are six applicants of Eldridge’s post, and the board is hoping to hire someone by February. The deadline for applications is Dec. 23.
