ORONO – The University of Maine men’s basketball squad will team up with Toys for Tots on Saturday, Dec. 18 at the Maine vs. Michigan women’s basketball game. Men’s basketball team members will join representatives from the Marine Corps to collect donated items. The Marine Corps will then distribute them to those in need for the holidays.
Members of the men’s basketball team will be at Alfond Arena from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Fans coming to the game are encouraged to take part in the event to help those who are less fortunate by bringing an unwrapped toy to the game. Tickets are available by calling 1-800-756-TEAM. Ticket office hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Wolters, Morgan earn America East honors
BOSTON – The Americas East Conference announced that Megan Wolters has been selected as women’s swimmer of the week, and Anthony Morgan was the men’s field performer of the week.
Wolters won three individual events in a 193-107 dual meet win over Boston University. She picked up first-place finishes in the 200 free (1:55.55), 200 back (2:08.58), which was 12 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, and the 200 IM (2:14.75). She was also a member of the first-place 200 medley relay.
Morgan finished first in the weight throw with a toss of 16 meters. He added a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 13.11 meters.
Gagne named interim SID at Bates
LEWISTON – Matt Gagne, a 2004 Bates College graduate, has been named interim sports information director at Bates College. He replaces Aaron Todd, who leaves Bates to take the same position at Merrimack College.
Gagne graduated from Bates in May with a degree in English. He interned in the Sports Information Office for four years, briefly overseeing the office on an interim basis the beginning of his junior year. He also freelanced for Bates Magazine.
