LEWISTON – High-definition radio has arrived.

Maine Public Broadcasting began operating the state’s first terrestrial digital radio station on Nov. 9 when WMEH-HD, at 90.9 MHz, signed onto the air.

“In the past, we have been bound by the physics of analog radio broadcasting,” explains Gil Maxwell, Maine Public Broadcasting’s chief operating officer. “This technology enables us to jump to the next level by providing true reproduction of sound, moving the listener into the recording studio or concert hall.”

The six other radio stations operated by Maine Public Broadcasting – WMED-FM in Calais at 89.7, WMEW-FM in Waterville at 91.3, WMEF-FM in Fort Kent at 106.5, WMEA-FM in Portland at 90.1, WMEM in Presque Isle at 106.1, and WMEP-FM in Camden at 90.5 – will undergo digital conversion within the next year through a grant provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
