CANTON – Six area teenagers were taken to hospitals in Lewiston and Rumford Wednesday after the vehicle they were in rolled over and hit a utility pole on Jewett Hill Road.

None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, Med-Care Ambulance paramedic and Director Dean Milligan said at the scene.

A 17-year-old Canton girl, who was driving her parents’ 1998 Chevrolet Blazer, was ejected through the windshield, Oxford County Deputy Justin Brown said.

Brown declined to name the four girls and two boys involved in the wreck. Four were from Canton: a 16-year-old boy and girl and a 17-year-old boy and girl. Also in the vehicle were a Dixfield girl and Peru girl; their ages were not immediately available.

Milligan said the driver and another teen were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

A third injured teen was taken to Rumford Hospital by Med-Care, as were three other youths, who were to be evaluated for injuries, Milligan said.

Brown said speed and road conditions were factors in the 1:28 p.m. crash, which occurred in front of Dacata Auto Repair at 451 Jewett Hill Road.

Brown said he has not yet had a chance to speak with the driver to learn what happened.

Oxford County Sgt. Gary Hill said that based on evidence at the scene, it appeared that the driver of the eastbound Blazer lost control on black ice and sand in a dip in the road that rounded a slight uphill curve.

The Blazer apparently slid sideways, hit a ditch and rolled over at least once, whacking a utility pole before landing off the road on its passenger side, police said.

The crash shattered the pole into three pieces, causing power lines to call across the road for several feet. Electrical power to homes in the area was cut.

Milligan said he was told that the boys helped the girls out of vehicle.

Canton firefighters and Canton Rescue responded, as did Med-Care Ambulance. A Dacata tow truck removed the Blazer.

By 2:45 p.m., a Central Maine Power Co. crew had removed most of the utility pole debris. They expected to be on scene into the night, waiting for delivery of a new pole from Farmington.
