WILTON – Santa’s elves were busy wrapping gifts for children, the elderly and shut-ins Wednesday at the Operation Santa workshop.

“It’s going fine,” said Sue Twitchell, Operation Santa coordinator for Western Maine Community Action agency. “We’ve gotten in over $13,000 in cash donations as of Monday. We have, I am going to say, $30,000 in toys and gifts that have been donated.”

The program has received requests for more than 1,200 individuals in the greater Franklin County area, including Livermore and Livermore Falls, Twitchell said.

There have been about 15 volunteers, including a small core group each day.

The agency’s Housing and Energy Department is overseeing the Operation Santa program now that longtime coordinator Dawn Girardin has retired.

Dee Frost of Wilton and Diane Haley, an energy auditor with the agency, were wrapping toys in the workshop.

“About 10 years ago, me and my sons used this program and it was a godsend,” Frost said.

So she decided to help out this year. She has done some data entry and has wrapped gifts.

“I love it,” she said. “People around here are very nice.”

Gifts in colored wrapping paper lined the shelves, as did unwrapped items.

Applications for Operation Santa are given out when the agency starts its fuel assistance program in September.

The gifts are bought, wrapped and sorted by town, Twitchell said.

Local fire departments, volunteers and Knights of Columbus members deliver the packages throughout the area.
