RUMFORD – Longtime customers are returning to the newly reopened What Not Shop at the former armory on Lincoln Avenue.
“The reopening is awesome,” said Sue Angevine, an Upton resident who shopped regularly at the store until the Waldo Street location closed in June.
On Wednesday, she was shopping for items for a grandson.
Last week the shop, which features new and used items and is operated by the Oxford County Association for Retarded Citizens, reopened in a section of the armory.
Tina Williamson, manager of the shop, said all money raised through sales go toward programs for OCARC’s nearly 60 clients. The shop also serves as a training area for the organization’s participants, she said.
One client is training to use the cash register, and two are sorting donated items. Williamson said that two clients eventually will be employed at the store, one part-time and one full-time.
Shoppers can buy anything from slightly worn clothing, knickknacks and Christmas decorations, to household items, baby clothes, baskets and mugs.
Individuals and businesses bring in new items every day, Williamson said.
Cecile Lescault, with her husband, Maurice, of West Paris, are longtime shoppers at the store. Cecile was trying on a jacket, while Maurice was checking out everything else.
“We love to shop,” Maurice Lescault said.
The store is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
People wishing to make donations may call Williamson at 364-2139.
