LEWISTON – The size of the crowds at the Colisee on Saturday could depend on whether Red Sox players accompany the World Series trophy, according to city leaders.

But the city is not taking chances, said City Administrator Jim Bennett. Six police officers will monitor crowds as the trophy makes its way through Lewiston.

“We really don’t know what to expect,” Bennett said. “The crowd could be bigger if players show, but who knows?”

As of Thursday afternoon, it was unlikely that any Red Sox players would accompany the trophy to Lewiston.

Even so, the city is preparing for a mighty crowd. The trophy will be set up in the Colisee’s new concession area. Fans will be divided up into two lines, those who want their photograph taken with the trophy and those only want to see it. The city plans to take pictures of fans with the trophy and to put the photos on the city’s Web site, from which people can download them.

“We’re trying to accommodate as many people as we can in that hour and a half,” said Colisee Manager Paul Leclair.

Fans should park in the lower Colisee parking lot. Lines will form at the northwestern entrance, wind up the stairs, through the concession area and back out the southwestern doors.

The trophy will make its first Maine appearance in Portland today, where it will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hadlock Field. The city of Portland plans a “rolling rally” along Congress Street from 2:30 to 3 p.m., followed by a rally with players at Monument Square at 3 p.m.

The trophy will venture north on Saturday, beginning in Aroostook Centre Mall in Presque Isle at 8 a.m. and working its way south. Stops are planned in Bangor, Augusta, Lewiston, Bethel and Newry.

The trophy is expected to leave Augusta at 3 p.m. and to arrive in Lewiston by 4 p.m. It will be on display at the Colisee for 90 minutes before moving on to Bethel.
