PARIS – It may soon be possible to throw on a pair of ice skates and take a spin around Moore Park, if the Parks and Recreation Committee gets approval for an ice rink.
Committee Chairman Dana Chandler has asked the Paris Board of Selectmen to approve a temporary rink.
“This is more or less an experimental-type year,” he told the board Monday, explaining that the committee would like to see how well the rink is received and treated before attempting anything more permanent.
Chandler said the rink would be built using a kit, and the Paris Fire Department has already agreed to supply water for the ice.
Chandler told the board the rink wouldn’t be equipped with lights since it’s expected to be for daytime use only.
Selectman Gerald Kilgore said it’s a good idea, but he warned the Parks and Recreation Committee to be cautious. A rink that once stood behind the Norway-Paris Lions Club was vandalized, he said.
Selectman Raymond Glover also had reservations about the ice rink.
“I think it should go forward,” he said, “but I’m just saying – there are some things you might want the (Police Department) to open their eyes to.”
Chandler also asked the board to consider allowing a swing set in the park.
Selectmen Vice Chairman Bruce Hanson said the board should make sure the town’s liability insurance covers both a skating rink and swing set before either is put into place.
On Thursday, Chandler said the Parks and Recreation Committee has been researching ice-rink kits online. The costs, he said, could range from “$750 to $1,000 – it’s not as much as people would think.”
The committee has a budget of about $38,000, he said, which includes a salary for a part-time parks and recreation director. Right now, Chandler said, the committee is operating without a director.
Chandler said the committee will count on area youths to help keep the ice rink free of snow and debris.
“We’re hoping that the kids will help … but if they don’t, we’ll keep it clean,” he said.
