RUMFORD – Junior forward Travis Fergola connected for 16 points to power Mountain Valley to a 63-39 crushing win over Dirigo in boys’ basketball action Thursday.
The Falcons (3-0) led 34-24 at the half, but came out even stronger in the third frame to add another 10 points to the margin. Senior guard Korey Stairs recorded 11 points, including a 3-pointer for Mountain Valley.
Sophomore guard Mike Holmquist led the Cougars (0-3) with nine points, including a field goal from beyond the arc.
Hall-Dale 54, Winthrop 37
WINTHROP – Senior guard Jack Leet garnered 15 points to lead Hall-Dale to a 54-37 victory over Winthrop in boys’ basketball action Thursday.
The Bulldogs (3-0) came out strong with a 15-8 first quarter. Junior guard Jay Skillings and senior center Matt Wheelock contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Ramblers (0-1) bounced back from a depressing 13-2 deficit in the third frame to play even in the final quarter. Freshman guard Sam Leclerc led Winthrop’s scoring with three field goals, including a 3-pointer, and a free throw in the loss.
Pine Tree 70, Averill 27
FREEPORT – Jerod Verrill scored a game-high 19 points to lead Pine Tree Academy to a 70-27 victory over Averill Thursday evening. Ben Goodall drained three 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for Pine Tree Academy (3-0).
David Arnold did most of the scoring for Averill with 15 of its 27 points. Pine Tree didn’t allow one point in the first quarter.
Telstar 78, Jay 72
BETHEL – Junior guard Sean Caddigan banked 24 points to lift Telstar to a 78-72 win over Jay in boys’ basketball action Thursday.
The Tigers (1-2) scored 18 points in the second quarter to turn a one-point deficit into a 40-30 lead at the half. Jay forward Brad Loon recorded 22 points, while senior guard Justin Wells chipped in with 11 points.
The Rebels (2-1) picked up the level of play in the second half with a 26-13 third quarter and added another three points to the margin down the stretch. Senior forward Josh Longway tallied eight field goals and a free throw for 17 points in the Telstar win.
Boothbay 69, Monmouth 42
BOOTHBAY HARBOR – Kris Newnan tallied a game-high 19 points to lift Boothbay past Monmouth 69-42 in an MVC boys’ basketball contest.
Roy Arsenault also chipped in with 11 for the Seahawks (2-1). Zach Mackenzie drained a team-high 15 points along with three 3-pointers for Monmouth (0-3).
Poland 53, G-NG 35
GRAY – Jon Lecznar scored 14 points to lead Poland to a 53-35 victory over Gray-New Gloucester. Alex Smith also added 10 for Poland.
The Patriots’ John Edmiston nailed four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.
Wiscasset 73, Lisbon 56
WISCASSET – Jason Dighton drained a team-high 18 points to carry Wiscasset to a 73-56 victory over Lisbon in boys’ basketball Thursday. Joe Gallant added 15 while Chris Hersom and Conrad Griffen tallied 12 apiece for the Redskins (3-0).
Lisbon was led by Mike Wilkins who finished with a game-high 19 points. Evan Manocal scored 10 for Lisbon.
