LEWISTON – Helen D. Cox Smith, 77, of Canton, died Thursday, Dec. 16, at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston.

She was born, Sept. 15, 1927, in Rumford Point, a daughter of George and Estella Howard Elliot Donahue. She attended Roxbury and Canton schools, graduating in 1945.

In 1944, she married Emery Cox. He died in 1967.

She remarried on April 5, 1969, to Daniel Smith in Canton. They made their home in Canton until moving to Chesterville in 1988, and later moving back to Canton in June of this year.

Mrs. Smith worked at Brindis Leather in Canton, and later in local shoe shops.

She was a member of the Canton Baptist Church, serving as the pianist for several years. She was also a member of the Canton Mother’s Club, and enjoyed camping, reading and her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Dan, of 35 years; a daughter, Jackie Conant and her husband, Norris, of Canton; two brothers, Howard Donahue and his wife, Gloria, of Peru, and William Donahue and his wife, Gayle, of Grotin, Conn.; grandchildren, Pamela Fleury, John Conant, Tony Conant, Daniel Cox, Andy Conant, and Erin Cox; four great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Linda Cox, of Peru; and sister-in-law, Maxine Palmer, of Dixfield.

She was predeceased by a son, David, on Sept. 27, 2000; and a brother, G. Preston Donahue, on April 8, 1971.
