NORWAY – Winter storms, flooding and droughts are among the hazards considered by the Oxford County Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan.

The title may be a mouthful, but Norway Town Manager David Holt on Thursday described the document simply.

“Overall,” he said, addressing the Norway Board of Selectmen, “the county plan just talks about, kind of inventories of where all the dams are, where all the roads are that might be flooded, where all the people are” who might need to evacuated.

Holt went into a bit more detail, and explained that the plan needs to be approved by the town before it can be approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

While the town does little with the document, approval of the plan makes the town eligible for federal grant money for disaster preparedness efforts as well as post-disaster relief.

The town has used such grants for road and dam repairs in the past, Holt said.

The selectmen voted 5-0 to approve the plan.

According to a memo from Daniel Schorr, director of the Oxford County Emergency Management Agency, the county plan has received provisional approval but is awaiting approval from county towns.
