YARMOUTH – Barbara Dunmore Weigel, 83, died peacefully at her home in Yarmouth on Dec. 19 after a long illness.

Barbara was born on June 12, 1921, in Newton, Mass. She was one of three children to Dwight (Ken) and Ruth Dunmore.

Growing up, she enjoyed many outdoor activities including hiking the White Mountains and skiing at Tuckerman’s Ravine. She also developed her artistic interest and talents.

She resided in Newton until attending Westbrook College, where she earned a degree as a laboratory technician. During and after World War II, she worked as a laboratory technician at Veterans Administration and other hospitals in New England and Colorado.

While in Colorado, Barbara met and married Bernard (Ben) Weigel, originally from Ellis, Kan. Barbara and Ben raised three children in Wilton, where she lived for over 30 years.

During that time, she attended the University of Maine, Farmington, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 1986.

While in Wilton, she also developed a reputation as a talented local artist, specializing in watercolors and landscapes. She was active in the Franklin County Artist Association and frequently exhibited her work in local galleries and art shows. She was also a member of the First Congregational Church in Wilton.

Following the death of her husband, Ben, she moved to Yarmouth in 1992 to be closer to her children who lived in the greater Portland area. During this time in her life, she also spent several winters in Albuquerque, N.M., where she enjoyed the south western climate and painting the desert landscapes.

While on a trip to Jekyll Island, Ga. in 2000, Barbara met Bruce Johnston of Burlington, Ontario, Canada. They were married in 2001 and split their time between Yarmouth, Canada and Jekyll Island, Ga.

Throughout her life, Barbara enjoyed travel. She often shared memories of her travels, including an extended tour of Europe in 1951. Her further travels included England, Portugal, Scandinavia and Greece.

She was also an avid gardener. She frequently combined her talents, selecting her favorite blossoms for still life paintings.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Bruce Johnston; daughter, Anne Weigel and her partner, John Carleton, of Portland; son, Ben Weigel and wife, Patricia, of Falmouth; son, Bill Weigel and wife, Helen, of York; Weigel grandchildren including, Kenneth, Lindsay, Erica, Ben Jr. and Sarah; and brother, Bill Dunmore; and sister-in-law, Ginny Dunmore. She is also survived by her Canadian stepchildren, Dawn Johnston and partner, Greg, of Creemore, Jackie Boggs and husband, Shawn, of Parry Sound, Malcolm Johnston and partner, Leta, of Vernon, and Murray Johnston and wife, Kate, of Burlington; also the Johnston grandchildren, Sasha, Tory, Brittany, Marta, Michelle and Colleen.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ben Weigel; sister, Anne Dunmore; and parents, Dwight (Ken) and Ruth Dunmore.
