A Turner soldier critically injured while on his way home for Thanksgiving has shown enough improvement to have his condition upgraded from critical to serious.

The change in Spc. Mico Morin’s condition was made Monday at the Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo., according to hospital spokeswoman Kimberly Langston. She added that the upgrade reflects that Morin’s condition has stabilized as well.

More than a week ago, Morin’s condition was downgraded from serious to critical.

The soldier grew up in North Turner. He’s a 2001 graduate of Leavitt Area High School.

Morin suffered multiple injuries when the car he was in went out of control and flipped several times on Interstate 25 about 15 miles south of Castle Rock., Colo., on Nov. 22.

Morin was thrown from the vehicle. He suffered fractures to his neck and back, collapsed lungs and other injuries.

He and two other GIs from Fort Carson, Colo., were on their way to the Denver airport on Nov. 22 to catch flights home for Thanksgiving when the crash happened.

One of the other soldiers died in the wreck; the driver was hospitalized.

The soldiers were members of Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. They had served together for a year’s deployment in Iraq, and were to return to Iraq for a second year of duty in spring, according to Fort Carson officials.

Langston said people may send e-mail messages to Morin by going to www.swedishhospital.com, clicking on “patient resources” then on “e-mail a patient,” then following the instructions.
