NEWRY – Members of the Newry Bicentennial Committee are still looking for recipes for a special cookbook to be sold next year.

Committee member and Administrative Assistant Loretta Berry said Tuesday that recipes have been hard to come by from townspeople.

So, too, have volunteers to serve on the committee, which is tasked with establishing a three-day celebration in July. Newry was incorporated on June 15, 1805.

“We’re coming along, but we have very few members on the committee, but we’re trying,” Berry said. “We’re always welcome for new ideas and more help.”

The Newry bicentennial event, Berry said, would be held Friday through Sunday, July 8, 9 and 10.

So far, a contradance is to be held on July 8, a parade on July 9, and a church service and box lunch social on July 10.

Town firefighters are to hold a chicken barbecue, and there is to be entertainment and games for children on July 9.

“We’re trying to think of all kinds of things that would interest people,” Berry said.

So far, she said, the committee is selling hats and mugs to raise money for the event. On the way are T-shirts and a special quilt that will be raffled.

The quilt, Berry said, is to have pictures of the town’s old buildings sewn into it.

Additionally, copies of two books on town history are to be available.

Normally, the committee meets at 4:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month in the town office.
